I will be sending all four of my kids to camps this summer. Three of them will be attending an overnight camp. For my almost 8 year old son, this will be his first sleep away summer camp experience. I’m thrilled for him to have the chance to attend Catalina Island Camps, a camp that reminds me in many ways of my own “classic” camp experience.

Making the decision to send kids to camp is one that many parents wring their hands over. Making the decision to send kids to an overnight camp, in particular can be a tough decision. But also an exciting one. Lifelong friendships are formed at camp. Lifeskills are learned. Opportunities to try new things and grow abound at camp!

Camp was such a vital part of my youth that I am really looking forward to co-hosting and promoting a multi-part chat on twitter about the joy of camp. I hope you’ll join me and share your experiences & questions as we discuss everything camp. We’ve assembled a team of experts: Camp owners, former camp counselors, Camping Association representative & Camp Outfitters who can share their thoughts on how to best choose, pack, plan and prepare for the summer camp experience.

New Discovery of Catalina Archaeology Records

Detailed records and photographs of artifacts and bones from Catalina were discovered recently. These records will help the Catalina Island Museum catalog items they hold in storage from the collection of controversial collector Ralph Glidden. The LA Times published a great article about the discovery. It’s a fascinating look at understanding the history of Catalina.

CIC’s Mara Lague featured in The Magazine in LA Times!

Most days, Mara is in our office helping to make sure all the details of camp are taken care of so everyone and everything gets to where is is supposed be when is is supposed to be there. In her “free time”, Mara has volunteered as long as we have known her. Now she is recognized for her volunteering in the The Magazine’s 50 Modern Women Volunteers. She is found on page 49. Way to go Mara!

Zip Line Video

Here is our 2012 video of the new CIC Zip Line. The platform is about 28′ off the ground. If I had to guess, I’d say the ride is longer than the length of a football field. I will tell you it was very exciting sitting on the edge of the platfrom geting ready to go. I’ve done enough ropes course and zip lines in other places that I knew I was safe but you can hear me exhale loudly to calm myself down just before sliding off the edge.

The Zip Line will be available for campers entering 6th grade and older when they do the ropes course.

The Zip Line is one of the best things we’ve ever added to camp. We’ll update you on some other new things for 2012 in the coming weeks but it’s easy to say we have been busy this winter making camp better than ever.
