Tom and Maria Horner, Owners/Directors
Nick Horner, Counselor in Training
“Boo” Camp Golden Retriever
Tom and Maria Horner became Executive Directors of Catalina Island Camps in February of 1995 and owners in 2013. Together, they manage the camp program, staff, facilities and administration. CIC is a family owned and operated summer camp. Our values include treating our guests and staff as members of the CIC family and sustaining Catalina Island as our home for generations to come.
Tom and Maria come from a lifetime of summer camp. Maria worked for the Girl Scouts of Orange County through college as a counselor and later as the Director of Camp Jo Scherman. Tom was a camper, counselor and Director at Tom Sawyer Camps in Pasadena from 1967 to 1993.
Tom and Maria are actively involved in the American Camp Association, and as volunteers, have held numerous positions in the Southern California section and National organization. Tom is currently the chair of the Southern California/Hawaii Local Council of Leaders. Maria was most recently the co-chair of the Spring Leadership Conference for camp leadership staff.
Maria is also an ACA Standards Visitor, assisting in the evaluation of camps wishing to hold ACA accreditation and a trainer of ACA Standards Visitors and camp directors applying for accreditation. Maria is the Children, Youth and Family Services director at Saint Mark’s Church in Altadena. She is also the current Chair of the Saint Mark’s School Board of Trustees.
Tom previously volunteered as a member of the ACA National Education Committee as the coordinator of the Basic Camp Director Course, a training program for camp directors. Tom served on the ACA National Board of Directors from 2000-2002 and the Education and Accreditation Task Force from 2008-2010.
Both Tom and Maria have received the Outstanding Service Award from the American Camp Association Southern California/Hawaii Section. Tom has also received the American Camp Association National Service Award.
The star of the Horner family is Nick, who was born in July 1996 and spends each summer on the island. Nick started attending Tom Sawyer Camp in 1999, days after turning 3 years old (under the watchful eyes of his grandparents, Mike and Sally Horner and his Aunt, Sarah Horner, who are owners/directors of Tom Sawyer Camps). Nick has a great start toward becoming a future camp director! Nick is a Junior at St. Francis High School in La Canada. Nick plays ice hockey and football, is a member of his church youth group and loves to read. He will be a Counselor in Training II at CIC in 2014.
Our Golden Retriever, Nikolai Khabibulin or “Boo” came to our family from a rescue organization in October 2007. Boo loves being at camp!
