Sending Your Child to Summer Camp

Many parents feel a mix of emotions when their kids go to camp. While they may be excited for their child’s adventure, growth, and independence, they can also feel sad, anxious, or even a little lost without their kid at home. For many parents, this is a completely normal response to even a temporary empty nest.

Some common feelings parents experience include:

  • Sadness – Missing their child’s presence, voice, and routines.
  • Worry – Wondering if their child is adjusting well, making friends, or feeling homesick.
  • Excitement – Knowing their child is gaining independence, new skills, and fun experiences.
  • Relief – Enjoying a break from parenting responsibilities for a short while.

How Do Parents Cope with Sending Their Kids to Summer Camp?

Parents often cope by staying busy, planning something fun for themselves, or connecting with other parents in the same situation. Sending letters through the mail requires some preplanning and is a great way to stay connected with your camper. Camps may also post online photos of what’s happening at camp. Of course, it’s important not to read too much into those photos!

The good news is that most kids return home with great stories, new friendships, and a boost in confidence, making the temporary sadness worth it!
