The CILT Hike: A Transformative Adventure

For many teens in our Campers in Leadership Training (CILT) program, the CILT Hike along the Trans-Catalina Trail from Avalon to Howlands Landing is the ultimate rite of passage — a three-day journey of challenge, camaraderie, and self-discovery. Over rugged hills and winding coastal paths, these young leaders trek together, learning to rely on one another while exploring the breathtaking beauty of Catalina Island.

Each night, the CILTs set up camp under a blanket of stars, sharing stories and laughter, feeling the quiet magic of the island. Along the trail, they face doubts and fears, asking themselves, “Can I really do this?” — only to discover their inner strength and resilience. The experience teaches not only endurance and teamwork but also confidence, courage, and leadership in a natural, unforgettable setting.

The triumphant return to camp is a moment of pride, as younger campers gather to cheer on the CILTs. Watching them arrive inspires the next generation of campers, who dream of one day tackling the same trail and taking on the same challenge. The CILT Hike leaves lasting memories of perseverance, friendship, and the exhilaration of overcoming obstacles together.

The CILT Hike isn’t just a trek — it’s a life-changing adventure that strengthens leadership skills, builds lifelong confidence, and deepens campers’ connection to Catalina Island’s natural wonders.
